This is the time of year when many experience an abundance of joy, family memories, love, reflection, generosity and thanksgiving. However, it can also be a very difficult time for many. Please remember to care for the single moms, widows and orphans in your life, in your community and around the world. They deserve an extra splash of love and support this holiday season.

The filming at the LIFE Today Studios last week was so fun. James & Betty Robison and the entire LIFE Today crew are all so very welcoming and hospitable. It was even more awesome to have the opportunity to do a second show that night, alongside Ruth Graham! She is Billy Graham's daughter and an amazing woman with a heart and passion for authenticity and realness that mirrors my own. I loved our discussions on the show!

And to top it off I was blessed with a group of friends supporting me in the studio audience who all went out for late night pancakes after the show! Gotta love that :) Thanks for coming, girls!

You can catch my show with Ruth Graham, or my main show where I talk about my new book Breathe, when they air in a couple months.

Check back here for the air dates and times! Now I must go prepare to speak at a youth pastors conference about how to reach out and make a difference in the lives of this young, broken generation. See you back here soon! :)

September 8, 2009 Nicole writes:

As a speaker involved with the Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network's Speakers Bureau, I offer you this year's back-to-school tips for students:

While heading back to school is an exciting time, there are nonetheless risks involved when entering into an unfamiliar environment filled with new people. College aged women are at the highest risk for being sexually assaulted. Being aware of this risk is often the first step in staying safe.

  1. Trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe in any situation, go with your gut. If you see something suspicious, contact your resident assistant or campus police immediately.
  2. Avoid being alone or isolated with someone you don’t know well. Let a trusted friend know where you are and whom you are with.
  3. Get to know your surrounding and learn a well-lit route back to your dorm or place of residence. If you are new to the campus, familiarize yourself with the campus map and know where the emergency phones are.
  4. Be careful when leaving online away messages. Leaving information about your whereabouts or activities reveals details of your location that are accessible to everyone. Avoid putting your dorm room, campus address, or phone number on your personal profile where everyone can see it.
  5. Form a buddy system when you go out. Arrive with your friends, check in with each other throughout the night, and leave together. Don’t go off alone. Make a secret signal with your friends for when they should intervene if you’re in an uncomfortable situation.
  6. Never loan your room key to anyone and always lock your door. Don’t let strangers into your room.
  7. Practice safe drinking. Don't accept drinks from people you don't know or trust and never leave your drink unattended – if you’ve left your drink alone, just get a new one. Always watch your drink being prepared. At parties, don't drink from punch bowls or other large, common open containers.
  8. Watch out for your friends. If a friend seems out of it, is way too intoxicated for the amount of alcohol they’ve had, or is acting out of character, get him or her to a safety place immediately. If you suspect that you or a friend has been drugged, call 911, and be explicit with doctors about your symptoms.
  9. Don’t let your guard down. The college campus environment can foster a false sense of security. Don’t assume people you’ve just met will look out for your best interests; remember that they are essentially strangers.
  10. Try not to go out alone at night. Walk with roommates or someone you trust. If you’ll be walking home alone, ask a trusted friend to accompany you. Avoid the ATM and jogging at night. Don’t put music headphones in both ears so you can be more aware of your surroundings.

Sexual assault is a crime of motive and opportunity. Ultimately, there is no surefire way to prevent an attack. If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual violence, it’s not your fault. You are not alone. Help is available 24/7 through the National Sexual Assault Hotlines at 1-800.656.HOPE, and online at rainn.org.

~Last night I was live on the radio in Texas, speaking with the host of 89.7 PowerTalk and taking caller questions. It was a great half hour, jam packed with insights and resources, but some of the stories of the callers really broke my heart. There is so much hurt and so much pain from the past that carries over into adult realtionships. I pray each caller and every listener would begin their own healing journey and that those who picked up a copy of my new book will find hope and guidance along this difficult road toward freedom and change.

~ On Wed I will tape another radio show for a station in Cleveland and then at 3:00pm ET I will be LIVE on the radio again with host, Chris Fabry of Chris Fabry LIVE! I so enjoyed being on his show two years ago and look forward to diving into another hour of good discussion! I am sad that the spring semester of speaking is now over for me, but I have many great memories of beautiful campuses, amazing students and staff, inspiring stories and lots of fun, all of which keep me looking forward to the next semester. Thanks to each institution who made my visit possible this year -- I continue to receive incredible emails from many of your students and staff and hope to return again soon!

I recently wrote a contributing essay to a book called Pearl Girls: Encountering Grit, Experiencing Grace by Margaret McSweeney which will be released this summer. What I am most excited about with this book is that the proceeds go to two charities I have a big heart for: one that is building wells in Uganda, Africa and the other that builds safe houses for women and children who have been victims of abuse here in America. Go to the link above to check out and support this new book.

Now I need to brew a pot of coffee and prepare for my upcoming TV interview on the 700 CLUB! More details on that to come...

May 2, 2009 Nicole writes:

Breathe is officially released!

Find your copy at Amazon, Barnes & Noble or wherever you prefer to buy your fave summertime reading material! :)

This book is quite unique because I wrote it not only to sexual abuse survivors, but also to those who love them. There are separate chapters discussing our various relationships (parents, children, mentors, the Church, friends, best friend, spouse and God). Part of each chapter is written to the survivor, and another part is written to the helper.

"I have a passion for relationships because I have witnessed the devastating effects of bad ones and the amazing transforming power of good ones. I long to see relationships grow healthier because I know the difference they can make..." (page 12)

I pray this book helps survivors and those who care about them to develop stronger relationships, fertile ground for deeper healin and place where we can encourage and empower one another toward maturity and fulfilling our life's purpose.

April 26, 2009 Nicole writes:

We finished out the spring college tour with Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne, where I spoke to all of the

student-athletes and coaching staff on the issue of healthy relationships. It was a great time with a great audience.

Not to mention a great mascot-- Go Mastadons!

I am so so soooo excited to report that my first book, Hush: Moving from Silence to Healing after Childhood Sexual Abuse was just recently published by WordAlive in EAST AFRICA! What an amazing opportunity to greatly expand this message globally. I am also thrilled that I will be heading over there within the year to speak to schools, churches, civic societies, government officials and the media. Yeah!

April 8, 2009 Nicole writes:

Last week I had the high honor of giving the keynote speech for Sexual Assault Awareness Week at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. What an incredible group of students who made that week successful and I am certain their work will leave a lasting impression on that campus. I am pictured above with my new friend, Molly, who headed the entire event. We are standing beneath The Clothesline Project -- all t-shirts created by members of the Holy Cross community to speak out against sexual abuse and assault.

I also got to spend a day at Gordon College in Wenham, MA last week and had one of my favorite "Girl Talk with Nicole" sessions ever! :) So fun!

March 25, 2009 Nicole writes:

I just returned home from having spent some time on the campuses of Lee University in Tennessee (one of the prettiest campuses I have been to!) and Malone University in Ohio -- both are schools I had never visited before this year! I had a wonderful time speaking to students and staff in the big settings and in smaller informal ones. I am very encouraged by the number of students who show passion and enthusiasm for making a difference in the area of sexual violence, abuse, and the general secret hurts and addictions that many are carrying around every day. Thank you to those who are taking steps to create change and to build more authentic communities. Proud of all my new friends! :) And looking forward to hearing updates along the way! ....I have a few days to spend at home now and then I'm off to Boston to break the silence at a couple universities way up there!

I also wanted to let you know that I am a featured writer in a new book, Pearl Girls: Encountering Grit Experiencing Grace. coming out this summer. Through this collection of essays, readers will be encouraged by the heartfelt writings that deal with loss and hardship in a real and honest way. Other respected authors such as Shaunti Feldhahn, Melody Carson, Debbie Macomber, Robin Jones Gunn and more help remind every woman that they are not alone and that no circumstance is beyond the grace of God.

Last week I took a two and a half hour plane ride to Dallas, hopped in a rental car and then made a three hour drive to get to Howard Payne University in Texas where I had no cell phone reception...blah....but it was all worth it!

This is a picture of my homegirl, Dr. Athena Bean from HPU. She is one of the coolest psychologists I know :)

From TX, I flew to California for an amazing week at Vanguard University. I shared a chapel series titled, "Moving From Silence to Healing" and also held a late-night Girl Talk, where we had over 200 girls show up! So fun!! :)

Allie Marie Smith, my new speaker for OneVOICE (on thetopic of healthy eating and abundant living) drove four hours to see me! She is pictured next to me, on the far left of the group of girls :)

Over the past few years, I have received an incredible amount of email from people who have a passion for social justice and, more specifically, who are motivated to make a difference in the area of sexual violence. This brings me great joy! I love hearing your stories and your desire to reach out to other victims, and some to perpetrators, in order to combat this epidemic that is sweeping acorss our nation and our world. This crime has impact far beyond what we can see and it must stop! It begins with you. Each one of you can do something. And together, we will be an unstoppable force, bringing awareness, prevention, hope and healing to an issue that has for far too long been swept under the rug. No, we will no longer be silent! Sexual abuse, rape and sex slavery has no place here! I commit to doing all I can to make a difference and to raise up others who will do the same in their own circle of influence.

If you are on Facebook, please join my group, OneVOICE -- Victory Over Impossible CircumstancEs and read the discussion board for ways that you can break the silence and make a difference in your area. Please post your own ideas and stories, too! Let's change the world together! :)

No one should be for sale!

My heart has been breaking for the estimated 2 million children who are trapped into forced prostitution around the world (stat reported by UNICEF). Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery and we have got to stop it. Robbed of their value and identity, safety and love, these young kids are often sold by their own families and forced to perform horrible sex acts with multiple customers every day. They are given a number and no longer a name. These kids are brutally beaten or even killed if they refuse to perform their duties.

International Justice Mission states, "More children, women and men are held in slavery right now than over the course of the entire trans-Atlantic slave trade." In the US alone, it is believed that about 50,000 are trafficked into our country and 15,000 of them are children. This is not even mentioning the numbers that are being bought and sold from within our country every day! The numbers are excruciating. It is estimated that worldwide every minute of the day there are 2 children who will be sold. This is an outrage!

Last week a global child porn ring was taken down and 11 children from the ages of 3-13 were rescued. I am so grateful for the work that is being done in this area, but we still have a very long way to go. The multi-billion dollar sex industry only places our children at higher risk. The demand only increases and more pimps and pornographers seek to make a profit, by enslaving and abusing children, forcing many of them to live a life confined to a single lonely room where they simply wait for their next client. They are beaten, starved and conditioned to have sex with multiple customers all day every day. You can only imagine the effects of this heinous treatment, exploitation and abuse on a young life. Let's do something about this.
No one should be for sale!

If you think you have come in contact with a victim of human trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 1.888.3737.888. This hotline will help you determine if you have encountered victims of human trafficking, will identify local resources available in your community to help victims, and will help you coordinate with local social service organizations to help protect and serve victims so they can begin the process of restoring their lives.

Hi friends! I am passing along some back-to-school safety tips for students from my friends at RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the nation’s largest anti-sexual assault organization.

While heading back to school is an exciting time, there are nonetheless risks involved when entering into an unfamiliar environment filled with new people. College aged women are at the highest risk for being sexually assaulted. Being aware of this risk is often the first step in staying safe.

“The university setting is a unique environment that can foster a false sense of community and security. Almost two-thirds of rapes are committed by someone who is known to the victim, that’s why it’s critical for students to be aware of their surroundings and peers,” said Scott Berkowitz, president and founder of RAINN. “There are some very basic steps students can take to maximize safety. Knowing how to identify and avoid potentially dangerous situations can help to reduce the risk of sexual assault, both on campus and off campus.”

RAINN's Top 10 Back-To-School Tips include:

  1. Get to know your surroundings and learn a well-lit route back to your dorm or place of residence. If you are new to the campus, familiarize yourself with the campus map and know where the emergency phones are.
  2. Trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe in any situation, go with your gut. If you see something suspicious, contact your resident assistant or campus police immediately.
  3. Avoid being alone or isolated with someone you don't know well. Let a trusted friend know where you are and whom you are with.
  4. Be careful when leaving online away messages. Leaving information about your whereabouts or activities reveals details of your location that are accessible to everyone.
  5. Try not to go out alone at night. Have a buddy system in place with your roommate or with someone you trust. Avoid the ATM and jogging at night.
  6. Keep the phone numbers of both your campus escort service as well as the campus police with you at all times.
  7. Don't accept drinks from people you don't know or trust and never leave your drink unattended.
  8. Always watch your drink being prepared. Try to get your drink directly from the bartender or waiter.
  9. Never loan your room key to anyone and always lock your door.
  10. Avoid putting music headphones in both ears so that you can be more aware of your surroundings, especially if you are walking alone or at night.

Sexual assault is a crime of motive and opportunity. Ultimately, there is no surefire way to prevent an attack. If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual violence, it’s not your fault. You are not alone. Help is available through the National Sexual Assault Hotlines at 800.656.HOPE, and online at rainn.org.

~ I am also excited to announce that this month my friends at The Rape Abuse & Incest National Network (the nation's largest anti-sexual-assault organization, located in Washington DC) launched a new service to help victims of sexual assault online!

The new National Sexual Assault Online Hotline is the first secure web based hotline providing a safe and anonymous place for victims to get help online. Using an instant-messaging format, the Online Hotline allows sexual assault victims to communicate directly with trained crisis support volunteers and is accessible through RAINN's website: www.rainn.org

Young people are disproportionately affected by sexual assault - in fact, almost half of sexual assault victims are under the age of 18, and 80% are under the age of 30. RAINN developed the Online Hotline to provide this tech-savvy generation with secure support they need, using the technology that they embrace.

I am excited to help promote this online hotline, giving those affected by sexual violence a safe place to receive initial help and support on their road to healing.

an inspiring weekend conference for young women, entitled Worthy: A Night to Encounter the One Who Calls You Beautiful (see poster image), which is hosted by the amazing girls of Wonderfully Made and is being held at Santa Clara University. I will be the keynote speaker for this event and will be joined by recording artist, Jessica McLean. Exciting days ahead!

~ I recently spoke to about 2500 college students in the beautiful chapel at Cedarville University. It was a lovely visit. And I just got off the plane coming from Philadelphia where I shared my story at Philadelphia Biblical University and also at a mega-church there called Calvary Church of Souderton. It has been a busy spring, but all very good stuff! And I am very much looking forward to this Easter weekend :)

~ Here is a recent blogger review for Hush:

"Sometimes, when a person writes, it takes great talent. Sometimes, it takes great faith. And sometimes, it takes great courage.

For Nicole Braddock Bromley, her book demonstrates all three, and I am SO grateful for the privilege of reading her book! ... "

I agree and I am strongly in support of the new campaign to get the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline running 24/7.

RAINN's phone hotline (800.656.HOPE) has been able to help more than 1 million people to date, but the new National Sexual Assault Online Hotline is essential to helping more. The Online Hotline provides live, secure, free, anonymous crisis support for victims of sexual assault, their friends and families over RAINN's website. Currently the Online Hotline is operating in a pilot phase, running limited hours. In order to have the Online Hotline running 24/7, we need the help of people like you -- committed to fighting sexual assault. You can help RAINN provide online support whenever its needed - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Join the campaign! Become an online hotline volunteer, help fund it, or just spread the word.

~ This is a difficult time of year for so many abuse survivors. I have been receiving tons of emails from those who have struggled through this year's holiday season -- dealing with painful memories, dysfunctional families, loneliness and overall anxiety and stress is hard. And it breaks my heart. I pray all of you have been able to survive once again, taking time for yourselves when needed, creating exciting new traditions, reaching out to others in need, and simply that you were able to find peace and joy within. You are worth it -- and I wish you a fresh new year in 2008!

~ I did a great deal of book reading over the Christmas season, one of which was a novel, Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. I very rarely read fiction books, but this one has been recommended to me by many abuse survivors over the past few years, so I thought I would finally pick it up and give it a try. Yup, I LOVED IT! I highly recommend this book, especially to those of you who have ever felt dirty, damaged, used, abused, and worthless. This is a beautiful story of love and redemption that deeply moved me -- I couldn't put it down!

~ Are you preparing your New Year's resolutions yet?? :)

~ It has been a FANTASTIC fall semester so far, but a very busy one too. Last week I spent 4 full days at 3 universities and put 1600 miles on my car. This week I spent 7 days in Texas, speaking at 4 universities. And WOW it has been great!

But I will say that my "Texas Tour" was quite interesting --

To begin with, did you know that Baylor University has real bears on campus? Yep, it's true! Real life mascots that live in the middle of their campus! Pretty cool, huh?!

After speaking at Baylor, I left Waco and headed to Abilene. One the way I saw a sign in front of a house that literally said "FARWOOD 4 SALE". Omg. Can you believe that one? Haha! Love it!

Then between Abilene, Texas and Brownwood, Texas, there was a huge turtle walking across the middle of the highway, so we pulled a "U-ey" and headed back to rescue him from being hit. By the time we got to him a man in a pickup truck had already saved him. Texans are just nice like that! :)

But, like any other place in America, there are also some shady characters ...like the guy named Sergio who came to my hotel room door, knocking and saying that it was the law that he had to come in and do an "inspection" of my room. Umm ... YIKES. Yeah, that'll freak you out.

But this fall has just been amazing. The schools and students and staff at every campus has really been encouraging and made this work all worth it. God is so good and has really used my time and words to make a huge difference in not only individual lives and hearts, but on these campuses as a whole. People are breaking the silence, getting REAL, making a difference, and many have begun their personal healing journeys. I feel so honored to be a part of this incredible movement. And I thank you for the important role you play as my special support people who believe in this mission and who pray for me each step of the way. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. Love you.

September 14, 2007 Recent article from: THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Nicole Braddock Bromley
Thursday, September 13, 2007 By Sherri Williams

Woman shares story of sex abuse

Nicole Braddock Bromley loved her stepfather from the day he married her mother when Nicole was 3. He taught her important life

lessons, including how to drive a stick shift, she said. And she trusted him. But he also instilled fear in her as a way to keep a painful secret. For about a decade, Bromley said, he sexually assaulted her while she suffered in silence. He convinced her that she'd be taken from her mother if she told.

Bromley, 27, will share her experience today on the syndicated Montel Williams Show. Representing the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network, she appears as a guest with others who were sexually abused by their fathers. Bromley was chosen because of her willingness to help others, said Kathy Gulinello, a Montel producer. "That is a quality I always look for in a guest -- someone who takes a bad situation that happened to them and makes it a positive for others," she said. "She is definitely a survivor and not a victim. You can tell that from the first moment you meet her."

For the past six years, Bromley has been speaking nationwide to various groups, urging those who have been abused to talk about the abuse and to pursue recovery. "Every school I go to, I tell my story," she said, "and I have a line of kids waiting to tell me their stories, too. "A lot of kids feel they don't have anybody to talk to. . . . It just hurts so much to know that so many people are dealing with the same stuff."

Four years ago, she started OneVOICE Enterprises, an organization that works to help victims. Bromley, author of Hush -- Moving From Silence to Healing After Childhood Sexual Abuse, said it's imperative that survivors tell their stories and be believed and supported. "The first person you tell directs your healing," said Bromley, adding that the reaction that survivors receive after revealing such a painful secret can lead them to destructive behavior or toward recovery.

As a teenager in 1994, Bromley found the courage to tell her mother. Her stepfather, whom she does not name, committed suicide shortly after her mother contacted police, she said. Religion and faith have played a big part in her recovery, said Bromley, who majored in psychology at Marietta College.

As a speaker, she is effective because she tells students to trust their instincts in uncomfortable scenarios to avoid becoming victims, said Kimberly Ferguson, associate dean of students and director of student rights and standards at Capital University, where Bromley has spoken twice. And she helps others understand victims, Ferguson said. "She could actually speak from firsthand experience. We wanted faculty and staff members to understand what students go through."

Book review from The Citizens' Courier - Vol 5 Issue 5

(by Jerry Lyon, Citizens for Community Values, Cincinnati, Ohio)

Editor's Pick: Hush

Child sexual abuse in the United States is a problem of epidemic dimensions. If you read the daily paper, or listen to the evening news, you know that to be true. So numerous are the stories of adults taking advantage of innocent children that mentally, and sometimes even physically, we turn them off. The most common emotional reaction that such stories evoke from us focus on the perpetrators of these crimes: anger and disgust. Speaker and author Nicole Braddock Bromley challenges her audience to focus, instead, on the victims of child sexual abuse. The ugly stories seem unending, yes. But we must realize that for every child abuser exposed and convicted, there are thousands never exposed — leaving behind hundreds of thousands of tormented victims who grow into adulthood trapped in the pain and turmoil of their past. In her recently published book,"hush: Moving from Silence to Healing After Childhood Sexual Abuse," Nicole tells in writing the victims' stories that she has been delivering in person for years to college and high school audiences. As founder and director of One Voice Enterprises, the Columbus, Ohio resident has dedicated her life to bringing healing change into the lives of victims of child sexual abuse. One of the stories that Nicole tells is her own. She knows firsthand the painful steps necessary to move from silence to healing."hush" exposes the harsh realities of child sexual abuse, explains the pain it causes, examines the false beliefs that it creates, and empowers survivors to begin a personal journey toward healing by breaking the silence.
"hush" provides a message of hope that we need to get into the hands of every victim and survivor of child sexual abuse. But the book is not just for survivors. It is a must-read for all of us. As we work through public policy and education to change the highly sexualized culture that breeds child sexual predators, we must always be sensitive to, and prepared to reach out to, the victims of this epidemic. Rest assured: Many such victims, struggling in silence, are in your circle of influence. Bromley states, "One in three girls and one in six boys are sexually abused by the age of 18 and are told to 'hush' ..."

~ I want to honor and remember the life of Ruth Bell Graham (1920-2007) who died on Thursday, June 14. The wife of Dr. Billy Graham, Ruth has touched many lives and leaves with us a great legacy. Today, I am remembering a quote from Ruth: "Just pray for a tough hide and a tender heart."

I also like what Billy once said of their marriage:

"Ruth and I don’t have a perfect marriage, but we have a great one. In a perfect marriage, everything is always the finest and best imaginable; like a Greek statue, the proportions are exact and the finish is unblemished. Who knows any human beings like that? For a married couple to expect perfection in each other is unrealistic. We learned that even before we married.
The unblemished ideal exists only in “happily ever after” fairy tales. I think that there is some merit to a description I once read of a married couple as “happily incompatible.” Ruth likes to say, “If two people agree on everything, one of them is unnecessary.” The sooner we accept that as a fact of life, the better we will be able to adjust to each other and enjoy togetherness."

~ Today, the first Wednesday of April, is The National Day of Hope. First established in 2000 by a unanimous Congressional Resolution, this day is meant to give hope to abused children, to acknowledge the widespread problem of abuse in America, and to encourage everyone to do their part in stopping this horrible crime against children.

The Resolution asks that 1.) all Americans should keep the victims of child abuse and neglect in their thoughts and prayers, observing a moment of silence to pray for child victims; 2.) all Americans should seek to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect and to give victimized children hope for the future; and 3.) the faith community, nonprofit organizations, and volunteers across America should recommit themselves to raise awareness and mobilize their resources to assist abused and neglected children.

Interview and article from The Kate 'Zine - the women's magazine for Otterbein College - Westerville, Ohio

(by Kelly Givens)

Nicole Braddock Bromley is a local 26 year old, full-time professional speaker. She has dedicated her life to traveling across America speaking to thousands of students, at middle, high school and collegiate levels, about sexual abuse. She is the founder and director of OneVOICE enterprises. She was also a featured author in Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul: Daily Inspirations. Nicole’s personal book, Hush: Moving from Silence to Healing after Childhood Sexual Abuse, will be in stores this June 2007.

Q: Tell me a little bit about your past and what has brought you to this point in your life...
A: As a young girl, many people in my school and community viewed me as the “perfect girl” but they didn’t know that for almost a decade I was carrying a deep dark secret and afraid to tell--I was a victim of childhood sexual abuse committed by stepfather. At the age of 14, I told my mom. She is my hero; she believed me, took me to safety and reported the abuse. My stepfather denied it and seven days later our world was turned upside down when we found out he had committed suicide. I carried a lot of pain and shame into my teenage years and vowed to never again tell my secret.

Q: What does a feminist look like to you?
A: For me, [it is] understanding what it means to have a voice, speaking out for myself, and stepping into my role as a female. These things have been very important in finding my own voice, embracing my personal story, taking steps forward on my healing journey and now empowering other women and survivors to understand their own stories. I believe this becomes the most powerful when we come to deeper understanding of our spiritual journey along the way. My Christian faith has been a big part of my journey and helped me understand and love who I am and what I am called to do.

Q: How did you first find your VOICE?

A: A year after breaking the silence to my mom about the abuse, I had kept my vow and had not told any of my friends my secret, not even my best friend. But that summer, at a church camp, I told my story in front of the whole camp. When I returned home, I received letters and letters from other kids telling me their story of sexual abuse for the first time. I thought I was alone. They all thought they were alone, too. It was then that I realized if no one spoke up about sexual abuse, then no one would be able to heal from it; and it was then that I knew I was to be a voice for the voiceless.

In college, I studied psychology and in my junior year, after working through much of my personal healing journey, I began volunteering at a rape crisis center and domestic violence shelter. I felt I had reached a place free of the pain and shame associated with my abuse and I wanted to help others. I wanted to make a difference. Soon I realized that hearing real life stories was what helped people open up the most. So that is where I began. I was speaking in high schools and churches and community vigils and then in colleges and am now asked to share my story and message all over the country. It is amazing.

Q: You use many personal experiences when you speak, why?

A: I realize that the youth of today do not want preached to; they respond to real life stories and transparent people. Students seem to come out of the woodwork when I step off the stage. I think that is because they desire honesty and hope and, when they see and hear that, it helps free them to be real and open up in response.

Q: What is OneVOICE enterprises?
A: VOICE is an acronym for Victory Over Impossible CircumstancEs.
OneVOICE is an organization committed to:
-Educating and raising awareness of Sexual Violence
-Creating a national platform for Sexual Abuse Prevention
-Pointing students toward healthy lifestyle and relationship choices
-Carrying a message of hope and healing
-Breaking the ice for dialogue and discussion on sensitive topics
-Offering support and resources to individuals, schools, universities, churches, and other

             organizations

Q: Where do you want to be 10 years from now?
A: I hope to have reached young people in as many colleges, schools, churches and communities as possible with my message. I hope to have traveled to foreign countries to speak out and empower women and children and bring healing change to their lives and communities. I hope to have partnered with my mother, Rev. Cynthia Stiverson, in opening a healing retreat center for emotionally and spiritually wounded people desiring healing, freedom and restoration. I hope to have a second or third book published. And I hope to be a mother!

Q: How does it feel to speak out about abuse?
A: It feels energizing and empowering. I have such a great passion for helping wounded people find healing that I would not feel fulfilled if I were not doing something about it. I love sharing a message that few are willing to speak about and I am not afraid because I know how important it is. It is amazing how many people are ignorant to the issue and how many people think sexual abuse doesn’t happen in their community, so it is satisfying to know that darkness is finally being brought to light. I receive tons of amazing emails everyday reporting on the lives and hearts that have been positively transformed by this message; this is what keeps me going.

Q: What are some of the negative issues that arise from abuse for women? Disorders? Feelings? Relationships? Etc?

A: When the silence is not broken and a sexual abuse victim is holding in her secret, the fear and shame she feels inside may lead her to cope in unhealthy ways that will just perpetuate the bondage she feels. An excerpt taken from Chapter 4 of Hush might help answer this question:

“As our abusers once used their power to control us, now we use our power to control our life. Coping mechanisms are a way for us to turn the tables. As we cope with the pain of our past, we quickly realize that we have the power to disguise ourselves, to damage ourselves, and even to destroy ourselves.” Just a few examples of these unhealthy coping mechanisms are: eating disorders, abusive relationships, self-injury, perfectionism, the need for control, people-pleasing, being a “tough girl”, or suicide.

Q: What are some ways to reach out to abuse victims?
A: Sexual abuse survivors need to know they are believed; they need to know they are not alone; they need to be told over and over that it wasn’t their fault and that they didn’t deserve what happened to them, and they need someone who will listen to them and not look at them differently. They need an open ear, they need to share their story in a safe place, they need support, they need encouragement and they need to experience genuine love, care and friendship.

Q: What can we do to help?
A: Do what you can to break down the walls around these sensitive subjects. Help tear down the stereotypes and myths associated with sexual violence. Speak out about abuse. Talk to your family, friends, and coworkers about these issues; create dialogue and discussion so as to not let these things be swept under the carpet and assume no one you know has been affected. Be the one who will not allow others to be mistreated in the relationships around you. Be a big sister or mentor; show a child that you care about them and invest in their life. Start awareness programs and advocate for victims (April is Sexual Abuse Awareness Month and a great time to get people talking and bring in programs to address these issues). Volunteer at social service events and centers. And oftentimes the greatest thing you can ever do to help is to simply be a friend and an open ear to someone who needs it. With 1-in-3 girls and 1-in-6 boys being sexually abused by the age of 18, chances are it has touched the life of someone you know and love. Help them feel safe enough to share their secret with you and support them on their healing journey to a healthy adulthood. Oh yeah, and help me spread my message and get Hush into as many hands as possible!

Q: Tell us a little bit about Hush!

A: Hush is my first book and I am so excited about its release this summer. I believe this book will help set people free from some of the pain and shame they carry from the wounds of the past. It is my attempt to hold a survivor’s hand along the path from silence to healing. My personal story is woven in and out of the book, as well as the stories of students I have met in my travels the past five years.

Nicole is a very touching, warm and honest speaker. Her journey blends a sincere understanding of despair with a heartfelt message of recovery. Through finding her own VOICE, Nicole has helped countless others begin their path towards healing. Nicole is an inspiration and a true joy to speak with.

Help Nicole in her fight against sexual abuse by educating yourself on this widespread problem. It is time for all of us to find our own voice to stand up and speak out against sexual abuse.

Keep an eye out for Hush: Moving from Silence to Healing after Childhood Sexual Abuse, available for pre-sale currently at Amazon and hitting the shelves in June 2007. The book summary states: Childhood sexual abuse is running rampant, yet it’s the best-kept secret in our nation today. Its victims grow into adulthood with their little child’s heart trapped in the pain and torment of their past. Nicole Braddock Bromley shares her own story and the steps to moving from silence to healing. Hush exposes the harsh realities of childhood abuse, explains the pain it causes, examines the false beliefs it creates, and empowers survivors to begin a personal journey toward healing by breaking the silence. With words of understanding and comfort, Nicole tells the real-life stories of those whose voices would otherwise never be heard. She is straightforward enough to pierce the hearts of those in a survivor’s circle of influence, yet careful to tread lightly on what could be tender wounds.

If you would like to contact Nicole or learn more about sexual abuse, feel free to visit her web site at www.onevoiceenterprises.com. It is an excellent resource for both sufferers and friends of sufferers.
